David Hoyt's Inventory

Lieutenant David Hoyt was a resident of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Hoyt and several members of his family were captured by the French and Indians during the 1704 Deerfield raid. He was taken by the Pennacooks directly to Cowass (today, Newbury, Vermont) where he died of starvation in June of 1704 at age 53. This inventory of his possessions was taken in order to clear his debts and to insure that his family received their just share of his estate. David Hoyt's probate inventory (a list of household possessions, clothing, tools, and animals) helps us to understand the life and material culture of an early 18th-century resident of a frontier town. The value of Hoyt's estate far outweighed the debts he owed.
