Wooden Bowl
Native Americans made and used this elm burl bowl most likely as a container for serving and eating food. It was hand-carved with special stone tools used for hollowing and finishing wooden objects. The notched handle was probably for hanging the bowl with twine from the rafters of a wigwam or for tying it to a pack for travel. During the Late Woodland and Contact periods (1000-300 years ago), Native Americans also made pottery containers from clay and wove baskets and bags from materials such as rush and hemp.
