Liturgical Manuscript in Kanienkeha

This manuscript is generally attributed to Father Jacques Bruyas, a French Jesuit missionary to the Kanienkehaka and a contemporary of Jacques Marquette. Written in Kanienkeha or the Mohawk language, the manuscript was probably used to teach Native converts in missionary settlements along the St. Lawrence River. Shown here is the only color illustration in the manuscript. It is similar in style to European illuminated manuscripts.
