Louis-Hector de Callière's Portrait
Louis-Hector de Callière was born in Normandy on November 12, 1648. He was appointed Governor of Montréal in 1684 and waged a number of military campaigns against the English and Iroquois. Callière succeeded Louis de Buade Comte de Frontenac as Governor General of New France in 1699. He held this position until his death in Québec in May of 1703. Callière played a key role in consolidating the French presence in North America. He hosted the 1701 Great Peace of Montréal, a summit to conclude a peace between the French, their Native allies and the Five Iroquois Nations. Under the treaty, the Iroquois agreed to remain neutral in the event of a war between France and England.
