Arosen's Gifts

The Reverend Stephen Williams of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, received these four Native gifts in the mid-18th century from Arosen, Eunice Kanenstenhawi Williams's husband. The gifts were reportedly given to Williams during a visit that Eunice and Arosen made to New England from Canada. Eunice and her brother Stephen had both been captives of the 1704 raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts, but Eunice elected to remain with her Kanienkehaka (Mohawk) family at Kahnawake in Canada. The objects shown are a tobacco bag, red slate gorget, bullet or shot pouch, and a finger-woven sash. See individual entries on the artifact menu for more information on each item.
