Solomon Williams (1700-1776) was a minister in Lebanon, Connecticut, when he preached this sermon on Tuesday, August 4, 1741. The occasion was his cousin Eunice Williams's second visit to New England since her captivity in 1704. People came from as far as twenty miles to witness "this strange unusual occasion." Williams and other members of the family had long been baffled by Eunice's conversion to Catholicism and prayed that she would rejoin the one "true" religion and return home to New England. Reverend Williams translated Eunice's willingness "of her own Accord to make a Visit to her Friends" as a positive sign that the many prayers offered over many long years had been answered. His hopes proved hollow ones however, and Eunice soon returned to her home in Canada.
