Mashalisk Deed

This 1672 deed is a transfer of land from Mashalisk, also described as "the old woman, Mother of Wuttawwaluncksin," to John Pynchon of Springfield, Massachusetts. The land involved includes tracts around Sugarloaf Mountain, running from the Connecticut River to the Deerfield River. The transfer is payment of a debt owed John Pynchon for ten large beavers and other debts that, according to the deed, Mashalisk and her sons acknowledge. In addition to discharging her debts, Pynchon also pays with "sixty fada of wampum," two coats, some cotton and several other small things. Mashalisk signs the document with her mark, as does her kinsman, who is a witness.
