Four Generations of Sheldons

Deerfield historian and antiquarian George Sheldon (1818-1916) poses in this circa 1904 photograph with his son John, grandson George Arms Sheldon, and great-granddaughter Hazel Sheldon. The photograph was taken by Frances and Mary Allen. Sheldon lived nearly a century in Deerfield, Massachusetts. During the second half of his life he became interested in Deerfield's past and began writing his comprehensive History of Deerfield, originally published serially in the weekly Greenfield Gazette and Courier from 1895-96. Ten years later the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association decided to publish the history in a two-volume set. The volumes have since been reprinted several times due to the popularity of Sheldon's work.
