Shell Gorget
Gorgets were worn as items of personal adornment by Native Americans as early as 3000 years ago. Holes were drilled for string attachment around the neck. Many gorgets are of smooth stone that is ground and shaped into discs, squares, or other geometric shapes. By the 18th century, gorgets were often made from silver. This gorget is made out of a marine shell. It is etched with European-influenced designs of cardinal crosses, fleurs-de-lis, and checkerboard border. A sun design decorates the center. The exact date of this gorget is unknown, though it most likely dates to the 18th century.
